McDan Shipping Company builds Moot Court for GIMPA Law School

MacDan Shipping Company Limited, providers of logistics support to all who require shipping services, has established a $450,000 Moot Court for the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Faculty of Law.

The facility, which is the first in Ghana and in the West African sub-region, was completed within a six-month period.

It is intended to be used by the law students to have practical experience in arguing cases while in school.

A moot court is a mock court when law students argue imaginary cases for practice. Students also argue hypothetical cases which are mostly based on actual cases with some modifications as part of their training programme.

Honour and citation

The facility has been named after the Chief Executive Officer of the MacDan Group of Companies, Dr Daniel McKorley, who is also a former student of the school.

In addition to that, the GIMPA Faculty of Law also honoured him and the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood with special citations in recognition of their contributions to the development of the Law Faculty in particular and Ghana in general.

Dr McKorley’s, citation read in part, “…your quest for partnership has seen you support worthy causes that nurture sectional and national aspirations towards the grand goal. Your devotion and belief in the goals of the Faculty of Law and the larger GIMPA are the reasons for your endowment of the first-ever Moot Court in Ghana, a feat that only further testifies to your enduring legacy and standing.”

“Having distinguished yourself in business, you have shown yourself truly committed to the national cause. Your promotion of many goals and values today sees you at the frontiers of the march towards maintaining and improving on GIMPA’s value of excellence and institutional actualisation,…congratulations,” it said.

Will continue to support

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr McKorley  said the decision to put up the facility was as a result of the increasing number of people practising law in the country.

He said with such an encouraging figure, there was the need for students to have a real feel of a court setting while in school so that they could become better professionals in the future.

Additionally, he said the moot court was a necessary feature in any law institution just like other academic disciplines to enable the student to practice alongside their theory.

“This will provide students an opportunity to gain courtroom experience, which will enable them to build their presentation, argumentation and communication skills”, he said.

He expressed the hope that the establishment of the facility would promote legal education and improve the judiciary and legal systems in Ghana.

He also conveyed his willingness to continue to support the institution to attain the best in academic standards.

Mrs Wood and the Rector of GIMPA, Professor Franklyn Manu, commended Dr McKorley for his generosity and believed that the moot court would facilitate the study of the law.
